Walter Trier came to the UK in 1936 from Germany where he had been trained at the Munich Academy. Like other emigre illustrators, how their professional life developed after arrival is a matter of fascination - survival in the cosier world of the United Kingdom, the tempering of the Middle Europe graphic spirit by domestic forces. See also Rolf Brandt.

The covers have the continuities of the Woman, the Man and the Dog. Trier varies his historical periods and compositions, while maintaining interest and flair. He has a fascination for Toys, Tokens and other Hoffmanesque devices. Sometimes Trier, who also worked for SIMPLICISSIMUS, even shows elements of Wilhelm Busch (see second image in from the left on the penultimate row, the cheerful disintegration of the walking couple).
