The Illustration Course was based in the delightful Chad Varah House, easily reached from whatever Hotel I found myself in. For anybody familiar with the quasi monastic ambience of the Monastery at Norwich School of Art, Chad Varah was a home from home. Clearly ecclesiastical fittings and spaces jostled uneasily with the Bohemian and outrageous. The garden where we all met up for lunch was a delight, and a reluctance to return to the assessment show was plain to see.

Norwich School of Art still retained the antique trappings of its Boot and Shoe course, and Chad Varah 's corridors were rich in inexplicable shelves, tables and impossible electical fitments.
