This is one of Walker Evans most immaculate photoessays, in a balance of size and the alternating colour and almost monochromatic images. The choice of the moment of the day for the exact angle of light, and the sharp textures of the masonry is characteristic. Also typical is Evans' loving depiction of faded signs and the archaelogical evidence of human activity of the past, almost eclipsed by the present. He is also resposible for the text which demonstrates, if proof be needed, of his fluency and elegance of phrasing.
