Underhill's commercial work never appears in the histories of American Illustration. There is the danger his recent thoughtful painting that has been gathered together by the Dadian Gallery might obscure what I always admired and collected. Of the range of illustrative works I have traced, his work for Stetson was the most impressive. He may have got bored with gents in hats, but I never have. I offer four examples of his work - tied in with the release of feature films.

Viceroy cigarettes

Patient's POV for Travelers

Underhill (1913-2024) was the associated illustrator for Stetson Hats. And most memorably the spooky and heavily fissured professional men smoking Viceroy cigarettes with every facial pore registered.
With the shrinking of his magazine work he took to a high energy expressionism with oils.
