Louis Rhead

Illustrations to David Wyss The Swiss Family Robinson , Harper's New York 1909, and a quite bloodthirsty account of the decimation of a community of cheerful animals by a ghastly family who were determined to survive. Not Rhead's fault, but the subject does show him at his most dogged and amusing. He was responsible for the decoration of the units of the book. Look closely and you'll see that figure drawing was not his forté.

My edition of Louis Rhead's illustrated Kidnapped (KIDNAPPED being Memoirs of the Adventures of David Balfour in the Year 1751 written by himself and now set forth by Robert Louis Stevenson with over one hundred illustrations and decorations by Louis Rhead , Harpers, New York, 1921) has one peculiar feature - one illustration exists in both formats - black and white - and colour.
