Leslie Gilbert Illingworth, distinguished cartoonist (mainly Daily Mail)

born 1902, died in Hastings 1979.

Illustrative work to demonstrate how firm were his

drawing techniques. He had after all studied

at the Royal College and the Academie Julien.

In my youth I loathed his very name as his cartoons drew their

inspiration from the editor and the conservative bone-headed

political beliefs of the Daily Mail

and indeed PUNCH. I have been unfair. But so what!

His brushwork here shows a livelier and more puckish side.
