Both magazines, Cavalcade and News Review used a caption technique to imply narratives of staggering dimensions or banale inaction. The accompanying stories were anti-climactic and all the better for that. The overall effect is one of undermining the usual status of the Powerful, and endowing the Conventional with a sort of Magic Realism.

"He tripped, she talked..."

"He sold his bottles..."

"Pub Marbles run uphill..."

"It takes a man to make a washer..."

"He and Hiler shared a blanket..."

"Gargles precede Gurgles..."

"His wider powers were a warning to the Arabs..."

"He preferred Mickey Mouse..."

I haven't attached the full stories, so the relationship between caption and image will always remain a msytery.
