These headpieces to chapters are early examples of Morris' design work that have not been recorded. Each occupies the same sized space on the page. The book is an ugly and otherwise undistinguished publication (perhaps a part publication) where each chapter is a study of a particular battle. The covers and titlepage are lost but I can nevertheless find no date. From the editorial style (for which Morris was not responsible) the publication dates from c1893.

The sustained sense of invention, witty verbal asides and sensitive letterfroms alone make it worth close study. If it is indeed a major commission before the bulk of the work for Blackie's. it gives a satisfying idea of what he was capable of at an early stage.

There are over eighty examples, made available by the generosity of Frank Jackson.
