TYPOGRAPHY - A NOTE

In the Thirties I don't think Kauffer knew much about typography. When I was at art school, it wasn't taught at all. There was no chance to see type actually set up. All the designers had come from a painting background. Most of them. There wasn't a photographic studio at Salford. Nobody lectured about it. Kauffer's was probably just made up as he went along. Looking at Devon's Moors you can see how he adapts the letters to the design. Marvelous.

I always liked the Derry and Tom's poster that Kauffer did, with such wonderful colours.
