The fourteen wood engravings to Le Sphinx by the Belgian Symbolist Gilkin were Wright's first book illustrations although only a few were published during his lifetime. They pre-date his illustrations to Keats and are more interesting for their sharp modernism and bravado. The first engraving in the sequence perhaps shows what an impact Fritz Lang's film Metropolis made upon him (1927).

I'd like to thank Michael T.Ricker for making scans from his copy for my site.
