Maurice De Sausmarez.

He is better known as an educator than an illustrator, de Sausmarez only ever seems to appear in discussions about the work of Bridget Riley, who was a pupil. In fact he was a capable and stylish illustrator of books for children - here his book Historic City , Chatto and Windus London, undated c1950, drawn directly to the lithographic stone, each page 19 x 23 cms.

back cover backstreets 14 x 15.5cms

the city centre 11 x 17cms

magnificent view over the historical city, 16 x 28cms.

The overall design of the book is haphazard, the alignment of text and image careless, but the quality of lithographic illustration is evident. The drawing is firm and the control of spatial relationships also firm despite the small scale of the images.
