In 1893 at the Birmingham School of Art. where he taught. Gaskin supervised the production of A Book of Pictured Carols with thirteen woodcut illustrations by students and staff of the School. In 1895 Gaskin published Good King Wenceslas with six illustrations. A variant of When a Poor Man came in Sight Gathering Winter Fuel can be found on this site.

Early Gaskin work shows the influence on him of the Newquay painters yet under Morris' influence gaskin developed a tough and accurate line style of drawing.
