Harrison Fisher (1877-1934) was celebrated internationally as a pin-up artist. He is thus an odd choice to illustrate HIAWATHA, the masterpiece of Rattle Trap Verse. Fisher's interpretation is one of a fancy dress parade of Beautiful people in feathers with elegant sinews. The vignette mode he chose, with haystack scene to the right and a tiny portrait to the left, is highly unusual. If nothing else the scans celebrate the irrepressible daftness of Longfellow's metre
