John Falter ( 1910 - 1982 )

Falter has a calm, flat painting style which seeks to take a photographic reality and edge it towards unease. He is a masterly illustrator and I will add more images as I can acquire them.

Top row, second image - Here the combination of pastel shirts is as daring a colour combination as a scene from Michael Mann's TV series Miami Vice. Typical of Falter to have a frieze of stylised figures and a single cigarette falling from the lips. he is fascinated in the space between figures and how it may be flattened and accentuated to act as a sort of positive element. This is an advertisement for American Airlines July 1946, a detail measuring 17 x 22cms.

Small Town Life (MORE above) shows six of his great magazine covers.
