The proposed title is
'The Safe Cigarette, Visual Strategies of reassurance
in American cigarette advertisements 1945 - 1964'.
1. The work is now complete
2. The thesis comprises three elements presented
as a boxed unit (in the spirit of Marcel Duchamp's Green Box)
2.1 Nine artists' books and multiples.
2.2 The written analytical and historical sections
in the form of eight Volumes.
2.3 The developmental work and full scale reproductions
of original materialcontained on a CDROM bound into the volumes.
3. The Research Degree regulations as found in my
student handbook section 15, the presentation of the final thesis
makes eight points which I would like to address here variations,
one by one.
point 15.2 - My thesis is stitch bound conventionally
for security and permanence, with sufficient a heavy card cover.
point 15.3 -The exterior titling is as requested
in design format and appears definitively on the outside of the
box. The short title and conventional naming appears on each volume.
Because the volumes are deliberately bound separately to ensure
the optimum access to gatefolds and illustrations, the spines are
too narrow to accommodate conventional titling.
point 15.4 - all satisfied
point 15.5 - all satisfied. I have used 130 gram
acid free cartridge paper and conform to the regime of text on the
right with appropriate images on the left.
point 15.6 - all satisfied but the design considerations
of the volumes include a heavy leading to ensure legibility.
point 15.7 - all satisfied, with additional information
on locating analytical examples on the original page.
