 The brief

  • Please present a small aspect of your work in the Big Studio as before
  • each of you must engage the others in discussion – lots of questions please
  • put up a show of your work – just restrict the presentation to a small part
  • I want to get four presentations in each hour
  • and a lunch (not every hour)
  • Put work up and leave instructions if you can’t make the day.

•  Several of you persisted in giving a long and repetitive account of your project.

• Your questions of the audience were not clear and sometimes generally sought ‘feedback’ without asking yourself what your audience responded to specifically.

• standards of presentation were high

• some documentation far too long to present to an audience for instant reading

• other points will be made on the following Tuesday.

STEPHEN LONG : a presentation of the visual equivalent of a ghostly apparition as reported by his mother – the variants in the narrative. Material samples. Did group members have similar incidents ranging from the supernatural to the ordinary? Shelley’s memory of freezing in space – did the other person witness anything?

SOON-SUN HWANG : powerpoint presentation of various strands of the project, the preparations for the conference and the image manipulation of tiger faces.  Pasting the images into unusual surroundings.

RICK SHERIDAN – journalism and recent field work in oral history for the BBC project. Two written summaries handed to the audience for comments. Teaching the elderly computers – what are the major inhibitants. The need to differentiate clearly the various aspects of the elderly, health, background. Etc etc as the group suggested.

BRIAN LOVE  : the icon of the Poppy, the classification system for structure of making and formation of petals – the role of the establishment in setting up charities – the pagan and the ecclesiastical – the nature of ritual – the large reproductions of the Poppies and what appears on enlargement.

ANNIE WANG : three editorial possibilities A B and C, when combining two different ‘voices’ on the same sheet of paper- Jackie recommended Paperworks. The visual impact of the autobiography on the page, spreading and taking over the historical context. The possibility of duotone treatment for thumbnail images and the following of the colour coding  – where will the size of the originals be shown or described.

HEASHIN KWAK : the various events to which she has been invited – the nature of collaboration – could the event be franchised? – could a pack be sent out and the event run by somebody else – how can interactivity be identified and measured – how did kids enjoy the experience and why ? – notating the methods of making and press reviews.

MING CHANG TIEN : testing the system in the room- the differences when used in the gallery to the studios – is the graphic device of laying a path appropriate – does it enhance the work – does it make you laugh – the spacing of the dots and the size – inadvertent suggestions of wobbling trajectories – the use of the room and constricted space to provide a simulation of exile journeys.

JONG JEAN KAN :  the project in all its aspects, from Bulguk temple through to photography of Mongolia. The role of the educator, the impact of Morris Ruskin and the Arts and Crafts Movement, no specific issue flagged, no time for discussion.

SOLVEIGH GOETT :  the beginnings in testing words, narratives and visualisations of Memory. The group asked to read texts in languages that were not familiar. The idea of codes and expectations from graphic formulae. The feeling of the pieces. The nature of embroidery – how gestural and spontaneous can it be – the tension between the deliberation of the crafting and the immediacy of gesture and ways of making.

HSINGYI KU – the plan of elements of the Wedding project – concentration on the implications and possibilities of the Veil – linguistic interpretation – the use in mourning and festivities – the Veil of the Saint – musical performances, Faredah’s presentation relevant.

SHELLEY FOWLES  :  studies in the word grotesque – a history of the evolution of the concept –the combination of the animal and the vegtable etc – the chart asks for your thoughts on degrees of the grotesque and objects. German cultural emphasis.

BRUCE WHATLEY – My Right Arm – project summary, what means can be sued to make the disparities visible – filed work in Wales. The role of drawing in the process, attitudes to left and right. Illustrators asked what they do with their non-working hands. Getting out of bed.

MEGHA RAJGURU the photograph of the object – the role of photography in fixing the object. Questionnaires filled in.
