KAUFFER

His work tended to this simplification but when he first started he was quite illustrative.  I really like this, the Daily Herald poster. Francis Meynell commissioned it I think.. I’ve always really liked that design.

CASSANDRE.

You can learn so much from other people. Think of Cassandre and all the people he had as assistants and how they learnt from him - Savignac, and Francois for example. I met Cassandre just after the War. He was quite an extravert. He'd virtually given up by then, His English was good, having worked in America. In the late thirties he had got more interested in stage design because was disillusioned with poster design when things were turned down or messed about with. This was about the time his own work actually declined.

Like Cassandre I even thought of being a painter. Particularly in recent years. The painter there are no limitations, only the ones you give yourself.
