E.Jeffrey pictured the children's comic character Toby Twirl , whose reputation was always obscured by the shadow of Bestall's Rupert Bear . The stories were by Sheila Hodgetts and (a major glory this) colouring was by R.S.Clark. Illustrations are from Toby Twirl Adventures, London undated c1952

an entertaining end paper board game.
Personally I always preferred Toby Twirl to the complacent and creepy Rupert. I particularly loved TT's fat trousers that were so beautifully drawn in all positions and angles. The colouring added to much Jeffrey's fine drawing, particularly a pearlescence and a shimmering quality to fantasy palaces and ice.
