Edmund Lewandowski (1914 - )

FORTUNE October 1948

"The cover reflects the lead article on "Farm Horsepower". Lewandowski was commissioned to produce a design after a sugar beet harvester chosen by the researchers. "It is not a literal translation of any one harvester but rather a visual dramatisation of certain features..."

There is an excellent biography of Lewandowski in Karen Tsujimoto's IMAGES OF AMERICA, Precisionist Painting and Modern Photography , Univ.of Washington Press, 1982.

Lewandowski's work is a major feature of the artistic presence of FORTUNE, and deserves to be much better known.

In 1978 the Fairweather Hardin Gallery in Chicago gave him a one person show.
